Resources for Managers and PlannersThe free resources provided here for managers and planners in the tourism industry fall into three categories: Get EducatedIn this area, we cover background information on disasters and crises in tourism destinations. The topics addressed include:
Get PreparedIn this area, we provide tips for completing the essential steps every travel industry organization must take to be prepared, which focus heavily on steps organizations can take to mitigate economic loss and quickly recover the image of the destiation or orgainzation in the minds of consumers. First, all travel industry organizations must have a crisis communications plan updated at least annually to provide for changes in personnel and technology. Second, accurate, and timely information dissemination is critical; therefore, a crisis communications plan must include a protocol for quickly disseminating and regularly updating information to the news media, the travel industry, the public, and all travel advisory issuing agencies. Third, technological innovation can reduce economic impacts and accelerate destination recovery if proactively applied: on-site brokers must be aware of what is being reported about the disaster and must respond to those reports, correcting misinformation and establishing themselves as a source for journalists to call on. The Internet is an invaluable tool in tourism destination recovery, especially for recovering lost bookings immediately following the disaster. Tourism managers must be able to rapidly deploy the technological tools at their disposal. Four key information dissemination methods that should be included in every crisis communications plan are websites, email, blogs, and press releases. It would also be wise to include search engines, online travel agencies, and social-networking sites in information dissemination campaigns following a disaster.Get HelpIn this area, we provide links to key external sources of help.
